IMAGES: Improving Measurement and Geometry in Elementary Schools: A Resource Guide

IMAGES: Improving Measurement and Geometry in Elementary Schools: A Resource Guide
Janie Zimmer, Arlene Dowshen, and Dennis Ebersole, editors

This second edition resource book is written for teachers of grades K-5 and presents mathematics content for both teachers and students, as well as provides strategies for teaching and assessing concepts of geometry and measurement. Nearly half of the 270 -page text is devoted to instructional activities and lesson plans that address the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. The book also discusses cognitive and developmental issues, print and nonprint resources, manipulatives, and technology. Additions to this second edition include a section on brain research, more correlations to research-based studies, appendices with correlations to state standards, and a revision of the web-based resources.

In one activity, students use identical pattern blocks to create a larger, similar shape. They then compare the perimeter of the new figure with the perimeter of the original one and look for a pattern. The pattern is used to predict what will happen with other shapes.

Available only through RBS, IMAGES seeks to improve teachers’ content knowledge, increase their use of best practices, change attitudes toward geometry, and provide a better understanding of how students learn.
