Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics

Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics
National Research Council (2001), 454 pages

"Public concern about how well U.S. children are learning mathematics is abundant and growing," opens the preface to Adding It Up. The result of 16 experts working through the National Research Council, the book addresses this concern with diverse and rich research that portrays the mathematics children need to learn, how they learn it, and how it might be taught to them effectively.

The book begins by looking at mathematics and learning in pre-K-8 students and positing that all students can and should be mathematically proficient. Conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and productive disposition comprise the five interdependent components of mathematics proficiency.

By focusing on issues associated with teaching and learning numbers, the book examines how children can become mathematically proficient and how teachers can teach such skills and knowledge. Changes are suggested for teaching methods, curricula, and teacher education. The book concludes with five key recommendations, including detailed policies and practices needed if all children are to become mathematically proficient.
