This book contains 14 chapters related to invitational theory that provide examples of the theory’s implementation in schools in different parts of the world. Invitational education is a self-concept approach to teaching, learning and democratic practice that offers a perspective for evaluating and transforming the total school environment. This approach values human potential, collaborative activities, welcoming support, and personal and professional commitment.
After the introduction, there are 13 stories told by educators at primary and secondary schools and universities. The chapter authors describe concepts that are integral to the theory, such as collaboration, communication, and wellness, as well as how the approach has been implemented in schools at various levels in several U.S. states and other countries. Topics include is in online education and bolstering parent participation.
About the lead editor:
Dr. John M. Novak is Professor of Education at Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. As a public school teacher in North Carolina, Washington State, and the Virgin Islands, he taught from the pre-school to the high school level. He has written and edited numerous chapters in academic books and journals and presented papers at educational, philosophical, and psychological conferences.
