At NJACE, we offer a variety of workshops to help teachers increase their students' understanding of difficult astronomical concepts such as Moon Phases and Eclipses, Size and Scale, Stellar Evolution, and the Expansion of the Universe.
At our workshops teachers DO the activities while presenters MODEL true inquiry based learning. We don't lecture to teachers. Teachers will walk away with lots of resources, an increased understanding of astronomy, increased confidence to teach it, and a binder full of hands-on inquiry-based activities they can do tomorrow in their classroom.
A brief description of all of our upcoming workshops is given below. For more detailed information and to obtain registration forms, see our website or contact Theresa Moody at 908-526-1200 x 8942 or email tmoody@raritanval.edu.
The Sun is our nearest star, and yet many mysteries surround it. Scientists are studying the Sun using ground-based and space-based observatories, in a variety of wavelengths. Learn how students can do some of the same experiments in the classroom. In this updated version, we have integrated an interactive planetarium show that classes can visit as part of a Solar Unit. Includes lots of resources, posters, pictures, teachers? guide, other handouts, a workshop CD-ROM and a light breakfast and lunch.
Teachers will be engaged in hands-on inquiry-based activities related to Phases of the Moon, Eclipses, Size and Scale of the Solar system, and Features of Planets in the Solar System. In the process, teachers will learn about common student misconceptions and strategies to address them. The workshop includes lots of resources, a resource book (Universe at Your Fingertips) with over 90 of the best inquiry-based hands-on astronomy activities for grades K-12, a workshop CD-ROM and a light breakfast and lunch.
Experience inquiry-based activities that address Astronomy Standards: Stars (Astronomy -Strand C) and Galaxies (Astronomy - Strand D): Investigate the Properties of Stars and Explore their Life Cycles, Investigate the Properties of Galaxies and the Expansion of the Universe. The workshop includes lots of resources on stars and galaxies, a workbook (More Universe at Your Fingertips) filled with over 45 of the best hands-on inquiry-based astronomy activities, a workshop CD-ROM and a light breakfast and lunch.
All workshops are limited to the first 20 registered participants! Call Theresa Moody at 908-526-1200 x 8942 to reserve your spot, while the district processes your paperwork.
