Using TIMSS Videos to Improve Learning of Mathematics: A Resource Guide

Proof Lessons by Topic

Some TIMSS video lessons fit together in ways that will be helpful to pre-service and in-service teacher educators and professional developers as they plan a sequence of meetings with teachers. Following is a grouping of lessons by topics. Teachers need not strictly follow the recommended lesson order, but what is given here is the result of extensive viewings of these videos. There is no recommended order for the overall topics, since this will vary from one setting to another.

Angle sums

HK3 Sum of the angles in convex quadrilaterals and pentagons
A1 Sum of the exterior angles in convex polygons

Measurement of an angle given other information

J1 Angle between two line segments when given the angles these segments make with respect to two parallel lines
US4 Measurement of angles formed by secants and tangents intersecting a circle

Pythagorean theorem and algebraic background

  HK1 Squares and square roots
N2 Proof of the Pythagorean theorem

Triangles

A2 When are two triangles congruent?
J2 Constructing a triangle with the same area as a convex quadrilateral

Linear equations

HK4 The difference between a linear equation which can be solved for a unique answer and one which is an identity
S2 Terms, variables and setting up linear equations
