Educational, Cultural, and Historical Outlooks (ECHO)

As envisioned in the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (P.L. 67-365), the purposes of foreign exchange programs are to:

  • Increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange
  • Strengthen the ties which unite us with other nations.
  • Promote international cooperation for educational and cultural achievement.
  • Thus, assist in the development of friendly, sympathetic, and peaceful relations between the United States and the other countries of the world.

These purposes hold an enhanced urgency and significance in the post September 11, 2001 world.

The ECHO project is designed to:

  1. prepare 12 U.S. educators for a month of foreign study in four Central and Eastern European countries,
  2. organize and guide their professional development experience in Europe,
  3. facilitate the development of curriculum materials based on the overseas experience, and
  4. disseminate the project-produced materials.

Participants complete Internet-based orientation activities and participate in a pre-travel workshop to prepare them to make the most of the ECHO opportunity. Throughout the project, staff members guide participants through learning activities, field observations, identification and organization of resource materials, and developing Web-based curriculum modules that are maintained and disseminated by RBS and other project partners.

Using TIMSS Videos to Improve Learning of Mathematics: A Resource Guide

In the mathematics portion of the TIMSS 1999 Video Study, an international team of researchers videotaped and analyzed mathematics lessons from seven countries. This guide aims to help pre-service and in-service teacher educators help teachers learn from observation, practice, and reflection. These lessons provide snapshots of regular mathematics classrooms from countries that exhibited higher student achievement in mathematics than the United States in 1995.

Hungarian Conference on Conflict

Dr. Keith M. Kershner, Research for Better Schools (RBS) Executive Director, recently led a delegation to participate in a conference on conflict, Konfliktusok, conducted on July 2, 2007 in Hungary. The purpose was to discuss RBS’ planned programs for U.S. educators to enhance international relations through person-to-person interactions, to provide intensive professional development for the participants, and to develop Web-based curriculum products aimed at improving international understanding that can be shared widely through the U.S. education system.

Global Interactions U.S.-China Conferences

Global Interactions (GI) is a non-profit organization whose focus is to build partnerships between U.S. and international colleagues in order to further the exchange of best practices, research, and technologies. With 23 years of experience in China, GI is confident that school and institutional partnerships between American and Asian education institutions are the most opportune means for promoting understanding and sustaining relationships. These partnerships create mutually beneficial outcomes for students and educators to be contributing and productive global citizens, and to be successful in the global marketplace. Often schools and institutions require information and skills on how to develop and build sustainable relationships in an international context. That is the purpose of our April 2008 American - Asia Summit on Education Partnerships.

The five major strands for the Summit are:

  1. Language and Literacy
  2. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  3. Creativity and Problem Solving
  4. Technology Resources
  5. Leadership for International Relationships.

Experts who have developed successful partnership programs in the areas listed above will be invited to present and describe how others can be engaged through the programs they will create and develop at the Summit. In short, the program includes a menu of options that will support building sustainable American and Asia education partnerships.
