Title: Technology Education Express Program

Sponsor/Funder: Delaware Technical and Community College (DTCC), Terry Campus

Target Audience: Institutions of higher education

Collaborating Agencies: Dover High School and Capital School District

Dates: 2004 - 2005

Description: As the third party evaluator for the Delaware Technical and Community College, RBS is investigating the extent to which mathematics tutorial classes held in a mobile computer laboratory enhance adolescent's academic skills. RBS is collaborating with DTCC staff to collect survey data on student technology skills and attitudes, and is tracking standardized test results to estimate the extent to which auxiliary mathematics drills boost scores over time. Specifically, RBS:

  • Works with DTCC to develop an evaluation schedule and description of tasks.
  • Develops and distributes a survey to assess students' baseline knowledge and skills with using computer technology.
  • Conducts quarterly site visits to observe program activities.
  • Works with the mathematics drilling software used by student participants.
  • Created an interview guide to be used for administrator, teacher, and student interviews.
  • Facilitates planning meetings with high school and DTCC staff.

Outcomes: The formative evaluation examines the extent to which staff identified and recruited participants according to stated criteria, retained participants, and aligned activities with previously articulated goals. The summative evaluation examines the extent to which participants have increased their knowledge and skills as a result of program participation. Program staff anticipates that participation will help improve students' technology access, technology literacy/skills, and mathematics and reading achievement. Other possible outcomes of this project include a positive change in attitudes about technology and school.
