Metacognitive Teaching: Developing Student Potential (Video)

Paul Hilt and Janice Dilliplane-Kruse, Research for Better Schools (1992, 22 minutes)

This video is designed for all educators, but especially teachers who are concerned about students' ability to think and learn. Research has shown that effective thinkers and learners have certain characteristics in common. They monitor their own thinking. They are aware of what they know, and don't know. They know what they need to know in order to solve a problem or fully understand a difficult concept. Poor thinkers are less likely to know these things and are generally unable to describe their learning and reasoning strategies. As a result, they hesitate to "shift gears" when a particular strategy is not working and they are experiencing failure instead of success. Poor thinkers/learners do not have to remain that way, however. Students can be taught to think and learn. The most promising way to teach these skills is through metacognition.

Metacognitive Teaching: Developing Student Potential is designed to assist teachers in exploring the "why," "what," and "how" of metacognitive teaching. Specifically, the videotape is intended to:

  • Demystify the process of metacognition and promote interest in finding more about metacognitive teaching.
  • Communicate the relevance of metacognition as a teaching tool for confronting the problem of underachieving students.
  • Describe and illustrate, through actual classroom experiences, several strategies of metacognitive teaching.

It is relevant for teachers at all grade levels and all subjects. The videotape can be used to motivate, to develop initial awareness, and to provide new insights to those who already know something about this type of teaching. The nature of the content and the experiences presented make it particularly appropriate for teachers in urban school districts. An increasing number of teachers are discovering the value of teaching metacognition. They are finding that it empowers students to think and learn, thus giving them more control over their own future in a world of rapid and frequently unanticipated change. Comes with user's guide.
