Paul Hilt and Janice Kruse, Research for Better SchoolsThis video examines why significant numbers of students fail to achieve their academic potential and what schools can do about it. Principles of effective thinking skills programs are examined: making learning interesting and challenging through active participation, encouraging a facilitative teaching style, and emphasizing metacognition and higher order thinking skills. Actual classroom interaction between teachers and students is used to demonstrate these underlying principles in an at-risk environment.
One exemplary programHOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills)was chosen to illustrate the components of a successful thinking skills program. Other programs, including CoRT, Instrumental Enrichment, and IMPACT, are highlighted. In addition to authentic classroom scenes, there is a running commentary by teachers, students, administrators, and thinking skills experts.
