Teaching Mathematics in Seven Countries: TIMSS Video Study

(2003)

How would you like to view a mathematics lesson in another country? Teaching Mathematics in Seven Countries: TIMSS Video Study is a four-CD set that includes videos from eighth grade mathematics lessons in seven countries: Australia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States.

Between 1995 and 1999, the TIMSS 1999 Video Study filmed and analyzed teaching practices across 1,000 classrooms in the seven participating countries. As a component of the TIMSS study, the public release CDs aim to facilitate teacher learning. The CDs contain four lessons from each country for a total of 28 lessons. The software, designed by LessonLab, Inc., offers numerous features to enhance the study of these lessons. The features include subtitles of each video, user-friendly maneuvering within each video, transcripts of the lessons, commentary by observers, and an index of key points in the lessons.

The CDs are intended for use by professional developers and district administrators in order to conduct professional development with teachers. The CDs are compatible with Macintosh and Windows.
