This volume is intended for those high school students who have shown achievement in mathematics, but who need to extend and deepen their thinking about this subject. It is aimed at helping students confront the deeply perplexing character of elementary and fundamental concepts in mathematics. It takes the form of 20 selections from foundational texts in mathematics accompanied with commentaries, guides for reading, questions to be thought about, and class activities. The class activities presuppose preparation on the part of the student, and writing exercises are given with each text. The teachers and students use identical volumes.
