ACO: Assessment of Writing and Thinking Skills

Christian Gerhard (1991, 50 pages plus forms)

Many assessment tools fall short when it comes to applying results to student development, but application is the whole point of the Assessment of Conceptual Organization (ACO). Rooted in years of experience with writing instruction and extensively field-tested, the ACO process is based on the central importance of thinking skills, particularly categorization, in writing performance. The process includes guided writing of a paragraph, holistic assessment of the paragraph on three specific criteria, and a follow-up developmental interview with the student. The ACO is useful in group or individual assessment and instructional planning. Thinking skills in writing performance and classroom applications are discussed in the manual. Pads of 20 assessment forms at three levels, along with scoring forms, are available.
